In Mexico the development and implementation of alternative energies is being given in a very leisurely way, being that the country has the best conditions for the development of several of them, among which are the solar and wind energy, in which it could grow up to 12.000 megawatts (MW) in the short term.

This was mentioned during the Annual Frontier Energy Forum, where Pablo Gottfried said that the conditions needed to generate 12 gigawatts (GW) of wind power in 2020. Gottfried, who is a member of the Mexican Wind Energy Association, also mentioned that wind power could reach competitive prices for gas.

During last October the energy produced by the wind was only 1.000 MW, although it is expected that for 2014 this monthly figure can increase to 2.500 MW. The idea is to draw up a plan that will make the border area between Mexico and the United States an energy corridor.

It is widely known that the state of Sonora is the best place in all of North America to capture solar energy, a potential so far wasted. It is estimated that the energy that reaches a surface of 25 square kilometres of desert would be enough to satisfy the country’s energy demand.
